Equipment

  • large skillet
  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • mixing bowl
  • Aluminum foil

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large skillet, heat a drizzle of olive oil over medium heat. Sauté chopped onion and minced garlic until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Add ground beef and Italian sausage, cooking until browned, around 6-8 minutes. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, water as needed, sugar, and spices. Let the sauce simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, large egg, chopped fresh parsley, salt and pepper. Mix until creamy and well incorporated.
  3. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom. Layer noodles, half of the ricotta mixture, and mozzarella cheese. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with meat sauce, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese.
  4. Cover baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes or until cheese is golden and bubbling.
  5. Once baked, remove lasagna from the oven and let cool for about 10 minutes before slicing.
